Hey there.

If the earphones work correctly on other pc's then you might want to have someone take a look at your earphone socket on your laptop.
Some sound card also have software that detects when a jack plug is inserted. If your laptop uses these software then you will be able to see if the earphones are connecting correctly.

Just to make sure. You may want to try other make of earphones as well for the the jack plugs sometime differs. But only in some cases.

There should be no problem with the headphones because it is just a plug and play device; once you connect it, you will begin to hear sounds. But what you're saying is that you can still hear sounds from the built-in speakers even if the headphones were connected. There is a problem with the port; not the headphones itself. By default, (all computers) should divert all sounds to a headphone once it has been connected and nothing to be heard from the speakers. Try checking the software used to make sounds (e.g. SoundMAX) or you sound card. Don't forget to check the audio port; the three holes with blue, green, and pink holes.

Sounds like a bad headphone jack, especially if the headphones are not working. (You didn't mention whether they did with this laptop.) Typically, the laptop doesn't detect the headphones; plugging in the jack opens the speaker contacts to shut them off and enable the headphone.
