This is one very good question.
I would say it is due to the fact that being honest when you do not know a person well somehow intrudes into a person's personal space.
That is why a truly close friend who is honest is much more appreciated than a new friend/stranger who is so. For the latter, the honesty will be taken as being blatant or blunt.

Because you friends/chums know it's all a load of garbage.
I work with a guy who carries on with honesty stuff; and he is the most dishonest person that I have ever come across.
Anyway, who sets the honesty standards for others to adhere to. Don't confuse honesty with being blunt , or you won't have too many friends.
Maybe your chums like the superficial chit chat, rather than getting bogged down with standards, morals, principles, & all the other integrity stuff. Join a debating group if you like to get into deeper stuff. In the meantime, have fun.

I think it is because, most people are phonies.
When they run up against someone who is assertive and honest, they don't know how to take you.
If they will give it time and get to know you, they will appreciate you and become a dedicated friend.
They will respect you for being honest.
My father had that wonderful trait and he taught me to be honest and in turn I taught my kids (now married with children), to be honest.
We have conversations all the time how nice it is to find someone who is honest.
It's hard to tolerate a dishonest person.
Good question.

i think is because americans are very uptight, this doesnt happen in other cultures, americans just like the hi, hello, how was your day thing from a distance, they go all quiet and get uncomfortable when somebody tries to shake hands or talk about more personal things.

I don't know why but that's how it is, you know. Things just seem to go off abruptly when you feel like saying something and i totally agree with you. i totally agree.

because although honest, not eveyone is ready to hear the real deal due to fear or them being uptight or something liket hat..no one wants to break the ice or the air..
thats why people lie...they think it protects them from themselves
