Put the brake on, turn on the ignition, then put the car in gear. When stopping, set the parking brake, put the car in park, and turn the ignition off.

your car should be in park at which time you would depress the brake and then start the car and then put it in gear...unless it is a manual, then depress the brake, then the clutch then put in in nutreal and then start the car. when you park the car you put it in park and turn it off. if you are parked on a hill you turn the wheels accordingly, and use your parking brake.

For me, I place my foot on the break and turn on the car. If I have the E-brake on, I then disengage it and put my car into drive/reverse.
When I am parking my car, I again put my foot on the break, put the car into park (My car will not shut off if the car isn't in park first), turn off the car and then engage the E-brake if necessary.
E-brake = Emergency Brake, just in case you were wondering.

I start the engine and put my foot on the brake and shift into drive. You have to have your foot on the brake to shift, it is a safety thing on the truck.
