I saw it in James Baldwin's "The Fire Next Time." He wrote: ..."when a Christian nation surrenders to a foul and violent orgy, as Germany did during the Third Reich."

That was Hitler's term for the Nazi regime. "Reich" means empire, realm, or kingdom. In Hitler's view, the first German reich was the Holy Roman Empire, the second was the "German Empire" of 1871-1918 that started with Bismarck; and the Nazi government was the third.

Despite an alliance with other nations that together formed the Axis powers, by 1945, Germany had lost the war and ceased to exist. It was occupied by the victors.
