Children need structure and consistency. They need to learn to respect other people and their space. They must know that happiness is their choice and not rely on others to make them happy. Help them to understand that according to scripture they were fearfully and wonderfully made, the very hairs of their head are numbered and they have at least one talent. They must love and like who they are in order to love others. If you want them smart then be smart yourself and share your wisdom with them. Speak with them often, go for walks or hikes with them. Families that are physically active together and also share a common faith have a lot fewer problems. I wish you well. Mmm

less TV more Actual Experience
If you want kids interested and learning more of the material then they are going to have to hear see and feel the presentation. For biology go over local animals first... bring them to the kids let them see the way they behave. Don't explain to a child that one plus one equals two show them that popcorn and popcorn equals two tasty bits o' popcorn. Explain things that are "beyond their level" to them while they are young... Do you think it could actually hurt??? there is sooo much wrong with public schools today that i will not even get into it. Home school your kid. You want social interaction then take them to the park, the mall, a concert (rock or opera), and to friends, families houses. There is way too much that the seven dollar babysitter is doing now days(NyQuil) or that evil pill (insert random drug here to suppress the mood of your child) i am not ever going to have a public school raised child i don't care if they "find it a little harder to become a social creature" i can help them develop in this field it is easy to talk to a "sane" human...
C'mon lets go fire some school staff, Raise the bar for their schooling required, MAKE THEM TAKE MANDATORY PSYCHE EVALUATIONS!!!!

number one, they must know they are loved. They should be allowed to be children. Parents must be consistent, and involved. They need boundaries. Our society today has adopted a type of no consequence thing. They must learn that there are consequences of actions and decisions, be it good or bad. Get them from in front of the TV, and video games. They don't need every new gizmo that comes out Nor do they need top of the line clothes. They need to know that they the individual is important, not status symbols.

As far as making them smarter, start teaching them at a young age. Take the time to sit down with them individually. Read to them constantly. Make learning fun. Encourage, praise and reward good behavior.
To make kids happier, that's a little tougher. I think you've got to be happy yourself. The less tension, anger, and stress they see at home, the more happy-go-lucky and care-free they are going to be.

I have a babygirl and I give her all I have. All the love my heart can give. I keep her active. That's really important with a growing child. More reading Less TV. Outdoor activities and healthy meals. Discipline and guidance. Postive atmosphere, full of happiness and love.

by taking them to church regularly, living the 10 commandments in the home, spending dinner time together as much as possible, don't hire a sitter or nanny to keep your kids unless you have to. Don't get so into money that it comes first before your kids. I mean people who work so they can afford to get their nails done, hire a maid, hire a baby sitter, have a new car every year, stuff like that.

As an educator I would say give them confidence. They will always have something to look forward to, something to do and someone to love if they believe in themselves and like who they are.
Best of luck
