Since then many different forms of the zone defense have been either allowed, limited or completely banned all in order to keep the game interesting. I think in 2003, specially since the previous year 2002 they tasted defeat in the international arena. The NBA allowed the return of Zone defense to familiarize players of the kind of defense their international contemporaries are playing.
