I'm kinda trying to teach myself how to sing. I'm 13 and I won't be able to afford a vocal coach/lessons for at least another couple of years and I don't want to waste time before then. I have a piano, a karaoke machine, an old tape recorder, my CD collection, and a lot of free time on my hands. Anything and everything you know, don't hesitate.

I already sing everywhere...lol
I was in school choir for a little bit before I had to be home-schooled. I have music playing all the time, even when I sleep. I'm usually either singing along to or humming something. Could using my voice too much damage it?

Bend over.

It sounds silly but my 9th grade singing teacher once called me into her piano room and told me to bend over at the waist. Alll right... I did it. Then she playing something on the piano and told me to sing. I'll be damned if I didn't sound like Whitney Houston. It tought me to find my diaphram and how to use it.

Learn to tap into your power. You don't have to sing like Mariah, but, learn where your strengths are. Are you a soprano? More jazzy or more r&b or country? Pick a lane and stay in it, and perfect it.

See you on AI in a few years.

Edit: Fred is right - join the church choir, the school choir, anywhere you can sing, sing. When I was your age I HATED the church choir and the school chorus and school plays were STUPID and all that acting and stuff I did. I didn't think it RELATED to the rock n roll I wanted to sing. Trust me. Sing EVERYWHERE. The practice is great and learning to sing with a group is priceless.

Sing everywhere, in the shower, in the car. Really listen to the acoustics. Learn how to breathe from your diaphragm, which means making your belly stick out when you breathe deeply. Also you can strengthen how you breathe by lying down and putting some books on your stomach and making them move just by breathing deeply. You may also be able to take singing classes at the local college even if you're young, check into it. You can look for a choir which might take you even though you're young, and you can get a lot of coaching that way, too.

Forget it. Technique is not all the thing you need to learn. Someone need to hear your voice and teach you how to control the breath, not to waste the breath, how to maximize your voice efficiency and tons of things. If professional singing is a some kind of thing you can totally learn by yourself, no one will take vocal lessons. Try to join a church choir, and nice warm people will give you lessons for free!

Yes! I sing while cooking my Easy Mac!!! I found this very sexist, because not all women cook. I burnt the pancakes!!! The spaghetti sauce ended up on the walls!! Do not ask me to cook your Christmas dinner. My boyfriend does the cooking, I do the dishes. :)
