Perhaps your son is allergic to his formula. I hope you have not been feeding him food. This is a big mistake people sometimes make. If the child is allergic to the formula or food then it is hard to figure out what is the culprit.

Are you formula feeding? You could try switching formulas, as sometimes this can happen with mild allergies. If you're breast-feeding, I wouldn't change that, though.
There are really no good medicines taht you can give him by mouth. No research is done on these meds in kids that young (or in kids at all, really), and more stories are coming out it medical literature lately about kids under 2 years old accidentally getting overdosed on common cough/cold meds. There have even been several deaths in the US in the past few years in young children. Scary!
The vapor rub is not quite the same, but if you use it, only use very tiny amounts. Think of his tiny nose and lungs. Saline drops and good suction are safe, and really about the only thing you can do, unfortunately. Sometimes cool air can help a cough - try standing in front of the open freezer if you're not in a cold part of the country.
Good luck!

The Johnson baby vapor bath is AWESOME. I used it when I had a cold this winter!
Sounds like it could be allergies too. Your son will be okay. Use a humidifier if you need to. I took my daughter outside when she started coughing this winter. She was about 4 months old... I bundled her up and it seemed like the cold fresh air made her feel better. I don't know why, but it helped.

Listen to your doctor.
I know it is stressful seeing your precious baby sick. But your doctor knows what to do and has given you good advice. The humidifier is good and if his coughing gets really bad the steamy bathroom is wonderful.
Relax and let this cold take it's course. He'll get through this and so will you...
