You need to remember the discussion about apples and oranges.

If you say that X is an orange
Then 3X is three oranges
9X is nine oranges
-4x is taking away four oranges.

You can add up all the oranges.
1x+3x+9x-4x = 9x

when you have just regular numbers, just do the math;
+5-7+3 = 1

Add them up:
9x+1

Well you can combine all the x's and combine all the numbers, since you don't have an = anywhere you can't solve for x. x + 3x + 9x - 4x = 9x because 1+3+9-4=9 and 5-7+3=1 so simplified it would be 9x+1

x+3x+9x-4x+5-7+3

Group like terms together (ie. the "x" terms and the number terms without variables), so that you have
(1+3+9-4)x + (5-7+3)

Now just add and subtract the coefficients (numbers in front of the variables) so that you have

9x + 1
