pull up a seat. okay... think of it this way... hip hop is a culture. and rap is just a certain part of that. hip hop is considered to have 4 elements. sometimes 5.
1. mcing - rapping
2. breakdancing
3. graffitti
4. turntablism
5. and the questionable 5 is beatboxing...
so yeah. rapping is just spitting or rhyming. but hip hop is more of a culture. that it culminates all those elements i mentioned above. hopefully that helps out.

By the way people dissin rap/hip hop needs to be more educated... why do heavy metal artists get away with stuff that rappers do? ask yourself them questions for those ignorant people who wanna diss rap. ROCK ARTISTS USED PROLLY MORE THAN MIRU*ANA AND THAT ANGEL DUST the way they treat women. and their violence... etc.

Rap: a more gritty, dirty, street style (eg. Young Buck, Young Jeezy..)
Hip-Hop: softer sound, more like the dance music you hear in the clubs (eg. ying-yang twins, 50 Cent's "Just a Lil Bit")
