Do we really know anything that's useful to us anymore or are we consumed by all this unnecessary information to such mind-numbing extents that we've all become media zombies?

Who won idols, Iran is set to nuke world, Ford motors buys Shell oil, who wants to be a millionaire, pop ups, breaking news...it's all over me, on my phone, on t.v, on the radio, and especially online. What I'm saying is I'd be much more comfortable if I were more able to select what information I need to know and use. You follow?

If you never learn to think for yourself then all the education in the world is worthless.

Big difference. The time spent looking at insignificant information useless. Now if it's wise, that's another thing. I have a high school education, but some of the most arrogant people I've ever met have college degrees. I'm an immigrant, so the education I have is from not having everything, but appreciating what I have. Where I come from an educated person is one who is polite and has manners. Try it, it will do wonders for you.

yeah I feel you on this one, however there is quite a difference
I will use this analysis some people learn how to drive and some people go to driving school, some people get a job and some people are trained for a job, how would you like it if your teacher had not gone to school, or your Dr. didn't go to medical school but had a lot of theory's' of what the statics of your health concerns might be!
and I am not saying that information is not important, or ineffective in treating any problem, or it does not help with a solution, however your best answers comes from those who haved some experience at least, or have had some formal education.

No significant difference - in fact the information "overload" complement the education process. The knowledge acquired from accessing these sources of info is still a part of being educated informally (in addition to the formal education we get from the classroom). In addition, it is not compulsory to listen to broadcasts, watch TV, read newspapers or research in the internet. We are free to access or not to access these info. Admitting that there are also what we may consider "spam" infiltrating even reliable sources of info, we have the freedom to choose only information with educational content and value.

There is a big difference between education and what we get from the media.
Yes, the media bombardment is mind-numbing. But education is crucial to an understanding of the world. It's fine to have resources, but half of what's on the internet is bull, so you need some kind of education to be able to figure that out.

Well it depends on what you do with that info. Having access to info and not accessing the info is different. Also the info you take in gives you knowledge. Education isn't always about the certificates and the degree, it is what you know and what you can do with the knowledge you have from the info you ascertain. hahah!

It is still better to be educated and knowing information rather than having to look for it.
We do seem to be media junkies.
There needs to be some original thoughts around.

Well, think of it this way.
If I put a monkey in front of a computer tied into a University database.
It, would have access to alot of information, but that didn't make it educated.
Education besides bestowing knowledge, also teach's us how to use that knowledge.
IE: how to use that computer to access all that data.

Being educated is knowing how to look things up and what to do with them when you find what you are looking for.
Access to a lot of information is useless in and of itself.

It doesn't matter how many academic degrees you have what matter is how wise you are and how you use that wisdom.
The more you know the more the educated the decision you can make.
