I walked in to a local coffee shop today. I wanted an application...I disparately need a job. The person in charge of hiring happened to be there, so we set up an interview tomorrow morning. I am required to bring in a resume, which I have, but I'm not sure if I need a cover letter in this situation, as there will be no waiting period between her reading my resume and "following-up".

Should I prepare a cover letter? I need an answer ASAP.

Yes - you will want a cover letter - because it's not for follow up - it is to customize your resume to the specific job.

Dear xxx,

Thank you so much for agreeing to see me on such shortr notice. As you know, I am interested in working at this coffee shop because of it's reputation for fast, friendly service.

Attached is my resume, which will detail out my other experiences in the food industry.

Sincerely,

you

I'd say it's good to include a cover letter if you have the time to write it - it doesn't have to be long, just a personalized introduction that explains who you are, what it is about the job that you are interested in, and what you can potentially bring to the job. If the employer has the time to read a, say, one page resume, they also have the time to read a cover letter that could be just one paragraph. The most important thing is for the employers to know that they are not a "number" (as ironic as that sounds) and that you took the time to customize your writing for them.

A simple cover letter cant hurt. It does allow you to add specific info to your resume .

In this situation , if you expect an immediate offer, I would prepare a custom resume and skip the cover letter.

If you havethe interview, a cover letter is not needed.

NOW , right after the interview, type up a little note,
Dear Mrs. J--
Thank you for the opportunity to talk to you this morning.
After discussing the position with you, I feel i would be performing up to your expectations and I would enjoy the job.
Than you for your courtesy and I hope to hear from you,
Sincerely yours,

Then get it to her. ASAP.

This will convince her you want the job.

Good luck, & let us know how you made out.

I've never heard of anyone writing a cover letter for this situation. As someone else has said, the thank you letter will be more important.

It can't hurt. But cover letters are generally used as a way to introduce yourself, you've already done that.

More importantly, write a brilliant thank you note. Hand deliver it the next day.
