Bill Gates supposedly ''gave away'' the bulk of his fortune to various charities - so, how come he is still ''The World's Richest Man''?

I don't think he gave away that much. He may have pledged quite a bit, or used his fortunes to endow charities, but I'll guarantee you he isn't hurting.

I may be wrong, but I believe you are thinking of Warren Buffet the investor who gave a large chunk of his fortune to charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. He at that time was the second richest man in the world. As of today he is now the 3rd richest man in the world. So guy in Mexico has overtaken him for second place. To answer your question the reason why this guy is still rich is because he is still earning money. The money he donated to charity is going to occur over a period of time. It will still be a large chunk of his fortune, but not all of it. The guy is worth over 50 billion and he is giving over 30 billion. Something else to consider, and I am not 100% sure about this, but to be really technical, Bill Gates is not the richest man in the world. The Sultan of Brunei is worth more than he is, but since he is a head of state, he does not qualify for the Forbes list. It is only for CEO's, business men and women.
