My preference is Windows2000 Server. It is much faster than XP. I want to qualify my answer by explaining that the main reason is because it is more open to high performance tuning and tweaking which is a hobby to me.
Server is considerably pricier than the normal consumer operating systems for a reason, it's stability is more mission critical so it's built stronger.
XP and Vista are better for users who aren't as experienced because it has a lot more error trapping and security features to minimize problems. Not to say XP isn't good, and I do expect Vista will be better after some bug fixes and service packs.

I'm an XP user and am happy with XP. As of right now, few games and/or software packages are supported on Vista, and Microsoft is still patching it. The only way I will consider upgrading to Vista is when they release Service Pack 1 to fix the problems with the system. The only thing I can really tell that's different from screen shots is the design of the interface. Ask yourself if pretty colors is worth a few hundred dollars. As for 2000? Hm. Never used it.

I'm still using XP and have no interest in upgrading to Vista. I don't have a formal source, but everyone I've talked to says that the security feature on Vista is intrusive and annoying.

2000 and/or XP for the time being. Reason - they have been around for a long time, tested and true, bugs identified and patched.
Vista - not much good has been written about it, but for sure it's new and buggy. PLUS, upgrading will require all new drivers and maybe a new video card.

Vista is the best:
it has the very powerful windows defender,
it is the most secure windows till now,
it doesnt crash much as XP,
if it crashes the promblem is solved much better that xp or 2000,
It is most buetiful looking OS i have ever seen.
