go to the command prompt and type netstat, or netstat -an and it will display your open ports....from that point you can start figuring out which ports should be open and which should not...ex. port 80 should be open if you have a browser open...
that's the best I can do...wish I knew more...I'd like to learn more about it too...

If you have a firewall it should be reporting that your computer is being pinged from a source outside the network. You can often trace it using your firewall and also report it too. If you find the ip address you can use your firewall to block it, but it won't stop hackers if they really want info from you.

take off all monitoring programs and lock down all the ports that you don't use. Run a serious firewall. secure network. I run one server for my network, one machine to run security on all computers, one for e-mail, one for games and media. and a laptop and two ps2's and a psp. all of this is running secure as a ducks ***. except the ps2's and the psp but thats on a different connection.
