i noticed that for jack SPARROW and elizabeth SWAN...but i didn't realize that for Will Turner. this question made me interested, so i looked it up and i guess Will could be named after a whippoorwill bird>> http://www.ndi4all.org/grade45/Whippoorwill-c.html
but i don't know. It seems kind of strange that they would get 'William' from a whippoorwill...i think it's just a coincidence.
[and wikipedia isn't a reliable source. like i could go on there right now and say that pirates of the caribbean was created after a movie producer saw an outline of a pirate in the clouds and got the idea. but that would be totally wrong :]
;) interesting observation though!

Interesting question....except, how's Will named after a bird? I've never heard of a bird called a "turner"........
But that's actually interesting in and of itself. Jack and Elizabeth are both named for birds, and birds typically represent free-spirits - and they are both most certainly that! Will on the other hand is not named for a bird, and he's been fighting the duality of his nature. Which would actually explain his name being very prophetic - he hated pirates, yet became one in the end, making him a "turner". Ooooh, very interesting observation indeed!

It is Will Turner. Your theory has a flaw, no turner bird. There are terns but that isn't quite the same. Thanks for playing.
Wikipedia is written by people like us, they may or may not have the facts 100% right. I would look for some other evidence if I was you. SoWeetie below has a better theory on this than the wikipedia guy.

Will is not named after a bird, but after an ornithologist (a scientist who studies birds) named William Turner.

Sparrows & swans are both famous for their dedication to their mates. But neither Jack nor Elizabeth have too much to offer in the way of faithfulness!
