Grab your readers attention with an illustration
like
"Money was everywhere, it was falling from the sky. It covered the earth, and it was all mine"
And your reader will be like "whats going on"
and BAM you got thier attention
Start with something like
"Imagine you hear a doctor tell a mother, "I'm sorry we lost him". How do you think the mother would react? I know most of you would say "She would cry". But she doesnt. Why? Because shes the one who put him there. Those bruises, those scars, the death of the child, it wasnt just an accident. And the worst part? she dosent care. Thats the importance of this issue"....
or something not that cheesy
but see you grab the attention:
Closing would be this. Answer the questions:
So you talked about? Child abuse...blah.blah
So what? Its something thats growing everyday
Why should I(the listener) care? you can make a difference
or whatever.
Hope this helps!

Say nothing -- show photos of children who have died from child abuse. Maybe add their date of birth or age and some info how they died to the slide. Have a second of silence in memory of every child you show. Do the same at the end of your presentation. Silence can be very powerful and a picture is worth a 1000 words.
good luck with your presentation.

For an opening, use an example, that should get their attention. Otherwise, use a question, such as "What is child abuse?" which should then lead to you defining what you mean by child abuse. A Sociology professor once pointed out that no one has ever really defined what child abuse was, is it spanking? sexual misconduct? yelling at a child? Define your term. For a closing, tell if you're for or against it, again using your definition. I'm not against spanking a child in certain circumstances, but boiling them in oil is too extreme for me.

"Child abuse is at all time levels in America"
"Having heard all this, what do you think we can do to help end this 'growing' problem?"
good luck.
