First, check the simple solutions:
A lot of RAM is used by wallpaper and/or a screensaver full of graphics. They run in the background and consume memory. (I have only 512mb RAM, run multiple programs simultaneously, and have set my wallpaper and screensaver to blank.)
- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need on a daily basis. For anything else you can wait a minute until it loads.
To do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.
cl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.
cl the icon for the program you wish to remove
then cl Remove.
There is also a “Disable All” button.
This will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.
When you are working in a large file, save frequently to restore full memory access. (Your work remains in memory until you “save” it to disk.)
Did you run an error check? Open My Computer,
Right-cl on C:, Select Properties, Tools – Run an Error Check ( checkmark “check all and fix); then run a Defrag
Run antispy and ad-aware programs. A free ad-aware program can be downloaded at:
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart
Stop Autocomplete / Remove Passwords
Tools
Internet Options
Content tab
Autocomplete
cl Settings
clear the boxes to remove autocomplete
Delete Autocomplete History
click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup
click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)
All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
Note: I don’t do games – games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files.
If all these things don’t help, you should consider getting more memory.

Without much detail it is hard to determine specifically. There are a number of reasons a computer can become laggy.
Be sure to be running and full version of a good anti virus and keep it updated. Scan your computer religiously, offline.
Could be little ram (random access memory).
I have a huntch that this hasn't always been a problem. Considering this maybe so, and considering that your computer is virus free and at least 25% of hard disk space left available, at least 512 megs of ram, then perhaps you need to defrag your system. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and disk defragmenter. Double click and run the defrag utility. It may stop and say it needs to scan your computer first. Allow it. Then when that is done, proceed with defragging. If this hasn't been done recently, it could take awhile, depending on the size of your hard drive.
Read the following as to why we need to defrag our computers occasionally. Good Luck!

Well, CHARLES, since you just joined ANSWERS TODAY, welcome !
Your PC is running slow because either it is clogged with uncessary logs and dll's and broken clusters (which are easy to remove) OR
you have too many programs that start up when you boot up OR you have not defragged your hard drive and cleanedout your temps OR you do not have enough RAM (you need at least 1 GIG these days).
You did not state what maintenence you have done on your PC since you bought it or what PROGRAMS you USE for cleanup.
As a first suggestion, log on to :
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts
and download this wonderful FREE program. It will give you a FREE EASY CLEANER. Read the instructions, remember to hit
FIND, after you click on the "uncessary files" and remember to wait after you hit "select all" and DELETE all. Most of then take a minute or so to disappear.
Then go to REGISTRTY cleaner and do the same. DFon't worry, if it says to delete 45 entries from your REGISTRY it is SAFE to says DELETE ALL with Toniarts.
Then do a defgrag or better still a scandisk.
The remove all programs from STARTUP (using EASY CLEANER that you don't really need.
If you have any trouble let me know and I'll "walk you through, step by step. Ron

Well it could be a number of reasons (you should be more specific next time).
You can have too many programs running at the same time or a specific program or service that is "hogging" or using up all of your RAM (Random Access Memory).
RAM is the type of memory that runs your programs.
The more you have the better, but for your situation I recommend you first download a startup control panel to disable/delete any programs or services (spyware for example) that may be causing your computer to run slow.
Go to download.com and download one.
If your computer is old or your running an operating system (such as Vista) then this could also be reason for why your computer is slow, but like I said in the beginning it could be a number of causes.

There are several primary areas that could be causing your computer to run slow. The most likely reason is that Corruption within your registry keys, registry classes, and registry settings, you have too many programs running behind the scenes and your system is essentially running in circles with its internal processing.

The leading causes of computer slowness are:
1. You're running Windows Vista
2. Your computer is infested with spyware
3. Your computer is old and lacks either processing power, memory, or has a slow hard disk.

A few things...
First, you could have too many programs installed that are running, in which case you need to buy and add more RAM (memory)
Second, you may need to defragment the computer (as files are added, they are saved all over the Hard Drive. Defrag. puts them back in order)

defragment it first, than download free spybot and free adaware and do a free Bit Defender virus scan and removal. After that if it runs slow, your computer needs updating
