It's a fiscal year sport. It just a 12 month interval that a company chooses to use to collect and report financial information. It's easier to get things done if everything doesn't happen December 31st.

at the current distance from the sun, the earth actually orbits the sun in 365 1/4 days, give or take a few seconds.

this is the reason there is a leap year, every 4 years (even number years, divisible by 4, except when they end in 00).

there is a calculated leap second, leap minute, leap hour as well as the leap year.
