A knot is a Nautical mile per hour. A nautical mile being 2000 yards (6000) feet. Since a statute mile is 5280 feet a nautical mile is approximately 1.15 times a statute mile. to convert just multiply. 10 knots = 11.5 mph

hello again;

there are a few more very important things one should know concerning the designation, "Knot" or nautical mile.

the circumference of the earth is quite nearly 21,600 nautical miles. how do i know that, or why should you care? well it's all a matter of knots, speed over water, and firing solutions. on the big lake (pacific ocean), one has no way of knowing just where one is as there are no fixed "land-marks", so-to-speak. and sometimes, one can't even see the sun, moon or a star for days at a time. but if there is one constant in this world, it's that at the equator on earth; one degree of longitude measures exactly sixty nautical miles. and that every degree of latitude on this earth measures sixty nautical miles. and one hopes that everyone already know there are three hundred & sixty degrees in the circumference of one circle.
and as it was already said; one nautical mile is 2000 yards or 6000 feet. with that information, and Pythagorean theorem (learn it, know it, use it) one can cross the big lake in a row-boat......
