I was under the impression that the 3 division winners in each conference got the top 3 seeds in the playoffs for their respective conference, but the standings on Yahoo shows that Chicago would be the number 2 seed if the playoffs started today even though Detroit won the Central division. Is the Yahoo standings right or am I right and Chicago would really be the 4 seed rigt now?

The NBA has changed it's ruling because of the seeding controversy last year. Remember that Dallas and San Antonio finished one and two in the west? well turns out Dallas fell out and they end meeting in the second round of the play-offs. So this season they introduced a new ruling where and if the top one and two teams are in the same divison they would take the top two seedings. Like wise if they end up whether top 3 or four thay would get the seeding based on their win pecentage. Another controversy is about to explode. In the East the central Division hosts the top three Conference teams. Cleveland is has now dropped to no. 5 despite having a better record. Mr. Stern will you please stand up?

Yeah, Chicago would be the 2 seed. Check nba.com and its the same. The NHL ranks the top 3 division winners in the conference and gives them 1-3 seeds based on point totals and then orders all other teams in the conference by their point totals. I believe the NBA just recently changed seeding from what the NHL currently does.

Ya the playoff seeding got changed and the divison winners get the tom 4 gaureteed but if a team has a better record they could get 2 or third. Just like in the west with San Antonio.

yes. the first thing is that the 3 division winners get the top 4 seeds. then the records get taken into consideration and chicago has the 2nd best in the east so they are #2.

last year denver was a 3 seed i believe but had the 6th best record in the west so they changed the rules and made it so the best teams get the higher seeds...its not fair if you have a bad division and get a high seed and beat a better team bc u have home court
