I own a nice old Yamaha acoustic that I have had for years.

I also have a Fender acoustic.

The Yamaha is my old dear friend. I can depend on it for good sound.

Find one that you feel 'at home' when playing. That will be the best guitar to start with because it feels like a friend. You will have no regrets in your investment that way.

Here's a nice informative guide below.

A great website is www.musicians friend.com.
A full acoustic guitar does not sound much different from an acoustic electric, because an acoustic electric guitar is just an acoustic guitar that plugs into an amplifier.
You should be able to find a decent acoustic guitar for about $100. Just be sure not to buy one with nylon strings. As long as you buy a full bodied guitar you should not have to worry about that. Most full bodied guitars come with metal strings.
You will want to buy a tuner along with your guitar, and if you are serious about playing you might want to buy some strings ( I like Elixers for acoustic and Ernie Balls for electric)and learn how to change them buy going to a free website that shows you. You can find one by using google.
I would start with an acoustic or acoustic electric guitar that costs between 100-150$.
There is no sense in spending a lot of money on something until you are sure you like playing it.
You can also get a decent electric guitar for about $125 if you know what you are looking for. Just be sure it's full size and not meant for little kids. You will need an amp with your electric guitar, and usually the ones with more options on them are the best, but if you don't have much money you can buy a package that comes with a guitar and small amp.

I have been around guitars/guitarists all my life. I will start by telling you that if a guitar says acoustic/electric all it means is that is has a pickup in it. This does not make it electric at all, it just makes it so that you can amplify your guitar easily. Next I will say that the guitar you buy completely depends on your price range. If you have a low budget for your first guitar, then you should look into the following for acoustics.
Epiphone
Takamine
Crafter
If your price range is middle to high for acoustic look at these
Seagull
Martin
Taylor
Gibson
Tacoma
Guild
And then for electrics the brands pretty much stay the same, and the quality differs through the price in those individual brands. Here you go for my favorite brands!
Fender ( the standard, but still make some very nice ones)
Gibson ( the Gibson Les Paul is probably the very best sounding electric ever, but also very expensive.)
Ibanez ( my favorite guitar brand overall, the make great ones)
Parker ( don't let looks deceive you, these baby's are spendy, but play INCREDIBLY)
Note on Gibson guitars, is that they just came out with the Melody Maker, a ripping guitar for a scary low price.
I hope all this helped you!! I go to musiciansfriend.com for the best prices by the way.
Washburn ( especially for a low price, but decent guitar)

A full sized acoustic-electric guitar will sound like an acoustic guitar, but will not sound like a solid-body electric guitar.
If I was to go out and buy an acoustic-electric guitar right now, I would get the Fender Acoustic Electric Guitar . The action on this guitar is incredible and the sound quality with and without an amplifier is just awesome and is currently on sale for $269.99 (list: $385.70 ) at http://download-sheet-music-online.com/gibson-guitar-sale.html (you'll see a link to the Fender Acoustic Electric Guitar near the bottom of the site)

if you have the money a Rickenbacker or Gretch semi-hollow body can give the range of acoustic and electric adequately to most any ones satisfaction but they cost . A friend of mine has a stereo Rickenbacker like Lennon used which he bought for around five hundred dollars now it goes for thousands . How much you plan on getting into it and if it's for a lifetime and how your budget is are all factors . I've got a Les Paul that I bought from the Late great Link Wray for fourhundred and fifty dollars which is worth around twenty thousand dollars now. so it can be a wise investment as well

Guitar Center is your best bet. Ask an employee for a beginners kit and they will help you to choose whether you'd be better with an electric or an acoustic.
(electric generally costs more than acoustic)

the best deal for a beginner on that kind of budget would be the Fender Squier Jazz or Precision Bass Package. It comes with the amp, strap, gig bag, cable, tuner, instructional dvd, and of course, the bass. There are also other starter packs made by laguana, yamaha, ibanez, and dean that are worthy of consideration, but the squier is ultimately the best. as for whether to get the jazz or precision, i didnt find much a a difference between the two, playability wise, but i went with the jazz because it has two pickups.
