I saw an article that posed that question a few months ago. Basically, we could do scores of things all at the same time, including universal healthcare for ten years, grants replacing all student loans, student-teacher ratios 20-1 or lower... I forget most of them.
Hey, Kenny S - So set aside philosophy degrees, how about simply investing in the future of the American workforce? Why are American businesses lobbying for more and more H1B visas year after year after year? Because we aren't educating enough kids with a lick of math sense, never mind sending enough to school for engineering. We're sufferring a de facto brain drain, not the least reason of which is that luddites like you can't comprehend that laissez-faire economics doesn't accomodate contingent externalities. Sorry you're too brainwashed to even know what you don't know.

There's a blatant silliness in saying that spending a lot of money to try and save lives from a murderous regime is wrong, but spending a lot of money on unneccessary (funding most college education) and worthless programs (universal health care and public schools) is an absolute neccessity.
I find problems with a world view that complains about how much it costs to end starvation and murder, but defends government funding of 6 years of school to get a philosophy degree as a basic human right. Makes me sad for the world we're leaving our children.

It might clean up ground zero and rebuild the twin towers, but it wouldn't do much for the victims who were in the buildings at the time or the loved ones they left behind.
Perhaps a little retribution might have been the best bet.

Fund a campaign to eliminate corporate welfare, farm subsidies, social security, medicare, medicaid, etc.
I'd save $10T in only 10 years. Talk about return on investment!

Did you ever stop to consider why the US is booming. We didn't send $1,000,000,000.000 into space. The money was spent producing weapons and supplies from industry mostly in the US. We would probably be spending it rebuilding things likes the World Trade Center if we didn't go to Iraq.
If you want good health care, work for it, don't demand it from the government. We don't need more big brother.

$100bln for college tuition relief; $300bln for worldwide food/water aid services; $100bln for medical research in the US; $50bln to fund the US space program; $50bln in no-interest loans for small businesses; and I'd probably waste the rest on hookers and blow. ;P

No amount of money, as history has shown us, will rid the world of the Husseins and the Hitlers. How much money would you have told the colonists to take to abandon their war with England?
