It happened a few weeks ago, I tried to play a cd and it just wouldn't read it. No cd's, dvd's, or roms. The drive exists, but when I put a disk in it tries to read it but gives up after a couple of tries. What can I do? Is it the laser out of alignment, can I check to see if that is it? Where can I find a replacement if I need to replace it?

Most likely the laser. Contact HP and have them send you a new CD drive, other than that there's nothing you can do unless you're willing to purchase a new one out of your wallet.

If it does not read any disk, under any circumstance then you will need to get it replaced. This does not sound like Software issue. You will have to search the HP website to find if the model of CD RoM you need is available.

Compared to a normal CD RoM this specific part is going to be quite expensive. Replacement of broken parts is another way HP makes money. If your Laptop is under warranty then you are in luck. Try searching for this at HP Website.

Good Luck

Sounds broke, typically there isn't anything user serviceable about these things. I'd suggest looking on ebay for one, usually someone has a listing for an HP unit with what models it fits (there's only a few different units out there so many laptops use the same ones with different face plates/labels/etc)

Try uninstalling the drivers in device manager. Reboot and re-detect them.
Get a CD lens cleaner disk.
Check your CMOS settings in setup.

The laser pickup of those gadgets have a life span, and finally fail. attempt cleansing it with a cd/dvd lens purifier. If that would not artwork then that signifies that the laser pickup is undesirable.
