Assuming you are talking about a male and female to breed them the you can sure give it a try. good indication the male is ready would be the presence of a bubble nest and as for the female...plump is good and her ovipositor or egg spot showing is even better.

If you mean anything else, then no, don't put them together.

Contrary to popular belief, not all Bettas will fight to the death, some can be rather submissive. A good way to test their level of aggression is to place the two tanks beside each other, if one "puffs out" and charges the glass then they can't be trusted together. Also, if they are both somewhat submissive and you have a large tank (30+ gallons) with only the two fish in it and lots of hiding spots, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. I know this because I worked in a pet store that sold hundreds of Bettas everyday, I've also had Bettas that I was able to put in together - just be very careful and watch them closely if you do decide to house them together - take one out with the first sign of aggression.

no no no no no!!!

if you put two males in a tank together...
they will fight each other until one dies...the one that is alive though will probably die from injuries and stuff. they are way too territorial to be together...that's why when u go to a pet store, you'll notice that all of the betta fish happen to be in their own separate tanks...for a reason

if you put a male and a female in a tank together...
they will first mate if they don't try to kill each other first...
the male will most likely kill the female before or after they mate...
if the eggs happen to live after this...the male will most likely eat the eggs himself

but...
there is a way u can keep them in the same tank (kind of) but not together...
if u look in a pet store...u can ask for tank separators (little glass slices that u can use to divide a regularly shaped tank in half

no wonder their technical names are chinese fighting fish!

Very very rarely but sometimes bettas can get along. If you put two together and they dont get along, it doesnt mean one or both of them cant get along with a different one. If you put them together you should watch them the whole time and when you leave, seperate them. Do that for a while and if they can get along, then go for it. Be very careful though.

Umm except for the fact that Bettas KILL each other?? (The males, anyway, and often the females as well.)

Bettas are solitary fish. Leave them that way.
