Larry Bird, of course. The year before he joined the Celtics, they were 29-53. His rookie year they were 61-21 and he was the only change in the roster. (Kevin McHale and Robert Parish were added in Larry's second year) This represents the second largest change in a team from one year to the next. The largest was David Robinson's rookie year with the Spurs, but he didn't actually play for two years after he was drafted by the Spurs to complete his military obligation. In the mean time, the Spurs added a number of complimentary players so it wasn't just the addition of Robinson.
That would mean that Larry Bird had the greatest impact on his team the first year he played.

Tim Duncan
When Tim arrived in San Antonio, he turned the once dying franchise around. He became a tandem with David Robinson as the second "Twin Towers" and they won the Spurs' first NBA title against the Knicks. The Spurs won another championship against the Nets. Then 2 years later, the Spurs again won the title against the Pistons.
Note: Ever since Duncan arrived, the Spurs have had winning seasons and they made it to the Playoffs every time.

David Robinson sparked a 35-game turnaround when he first played for the Spurs in 1990. The Spurs won just 21 games in 1989, but finished the next season with 56 wins because of The Admiral.
The previous record was the 32-game turnaround Larry Bird sparked in 1980. The Celtics of 1979 finished with just 29 wins, the next year with Bird, they won 61 games.

If you mean the greatest impact on his team the first year he played, Magic Johnson.
If you mean the greatest impact on the team that drafted him, throughout his career with that team, Michael Jordan.

This one has at least one easy answer.
Before Bill Russell arrived, the Celtics had won zero championships.
After he arrived, the Celtics won 11 championships in 13 years.
That's quite an impact. He had plenty of help, but Russell might be the greatest winner in the history of American sports.

I would have to say either Dirk or Carmelo. They both brought their teams from ROCK BOTTOM to the top.
