Use whatever you've been using up to this point. Anything you use will "stick" to pinkies. The bedding will help "insulate" the little guys so they don't get too cold, don't worry, "mom" will make sure none will suffocate from it. Whatever you do, don't handle the babies just yet, wait until they grow fur - mom may abandon them if you touch them. When it comes time to clean the cage, just clean around the nest being careful not to disturb the babies.

Fleace pieces or strips is a good thing..also anything cloth..avoid paper if you can. If you dont have anything cloth then paper toweling is ok, like Viva...its very soft. Mom should do the work, if she is comfortable with you...trusts you...you can handel her without a problem...then you can handle the babies within a few hours of birth. My first rescue had babies on me and I handeled them within three hours after being born. This was before mom really knew me..I had her a week. All babies lived includeing the runt, there were 11 of them. I still have ..peaches(mom),the runt Sargent, serenity..Aidan, dusty and dustin..socialized rats make awesome pets. Handle them frequently and take pictures of them, come to the links I provided for you!! We will help you through this!! Shaz

you can use a piece of paper towel. rats are very good when it comes to their babies. i breed them and i always use paper towels for them because it is easy to clean and they love to use it.. if some get stuck on the babies she will get it off them, she knows what to do.she will be fine and so will the babies. after she has them wait for about 45 min then go in the cage to see how many she had, if any are dead. if any are dead then you will need to remove it because she will eat it, thats just what they do. i see it happen all the time with mine. right now i have about 10 adults (2 with babies) and 10 babies(sm). you don't need to help her she will do it alone and she will care for them also. its ok to worry i know i still do. afte she has them wait for about 24 hours before you start to handle them, they don't abandon them if you hold right away but it is good to wait cause this will give her some time to get some rest. i handle mine the next day and doing this i will let mom see me touch them and let her smell your hand so she knows that it is you and no one else. rats are very good mothers and they also make good suragent mothers as well. i do this all the time and i have never had mine die on me for holding them. also when it comes time to clean the cage all you do is clean like normal but when you need to get the babies out then just scoop up and put them in where mom is, everyone will be fine, and nothing will happen, like i said i do this all the time with mine and i have never lost a litter from me holding them or moving them around to clean. good luck and congrats on the new babies.

I always gave mine Kleenex or toilet paper, or paper towels. She would shred it herself and make up the nest. Let her do the work, she will know what to do.

When all ours had their babies I put in torn up news papers along with their shavings and they loved it and did well.

Give her an old sock to chew up. She'll make her own nest if you let her.

Make bedding for your rat out of cheese cloth. It is very appropriate for that animal.
