You'll find that Mazdas aren't as reliable as Hondas and Toyotas. If you're considering buying used, especially, you will have much higher maintenance costs with a Mazda.
Owned both mazda and toyota in my time, by the way.

I had a Mazda Millenia S as my first car. Similar to the other folks here I had a great experience driving the car as it had a supercharger along with decent looks. However the cost of maintenance was horribliy expensive. The part alone for Mazda's are notoriously high and the labor is not cheap either. On top the that the Millenia had O2 sensor bugs that could not be fixed. The engines also blew (literally) on these cars. (my cars engine eventually blew as well as my brothers). Mazda did not back its product of course.
I would go with a Honda as the first car. I've had a Honda and an Infiniti as well and while the Infiniti is great and dependable nothing beats a Honda (maybe Toyota) in terms of dependability and low cost of ownership.
This is your first ride. Don't lose your shirt. Be Smart. Don't get the Mazda.

Can't go wrong with a Mazda, they are great cars and the Protege and Mazda 3 have been one of the highest rated small cars by Car & Driver for years now. Since Mazda does not have the name recognition that Toyota and Honda have you can get a used Mazda for less than what a compareable Honda or Toyota would cost.

Buy A MAZDA PROTEGE. Damn reliable , great on gas, and very light on the pocket. An excellent student/first car. I had one earlier, until a friend of mine rammed it into the back of a truck. Well, now i Own a 2004 Mazda 6 and iam loving it.
Mazda's have always been reliable vehicles, but zero on looks and comfort, but with the advent of the Mazda 6 and 3 , they are here to stay.

Like several others have commented, I've owned a Mazda, a Toyota and a Honda throughout my adult years and the Mazda, by far has had the least amount of maintenance issues, as well as maintenance costs associated with it. The hardest part for me was actually finding a Mazda dealer in my rural setting to actually handle the two times in which the vehicle required "dealer-only" repairs.
I think you will truly enjoy owning and driving a Mazda 3. At its current price, I feel it is a true automotive bargain.

I had a Protege and it was a great car. So what if its not a Toyota or a Honda? I own a Toyota and its had more problem than the Mazda and its only got 1/3 the miles.

When in doubt, check Consumers Guide. your public libary will have a copy.
Also go through reputable dealer if buying used. That is not the one with the most advertizing.
In general, Mazda's have proven to be reliable cars, I own 2 Miata's that have over 100k on them with no more then normal maintance being required.
