Labor Day falls on September 3rd this year. Labor Day is just another day off for Americans, however all the stores will be open as this is also a big Sales day. Labor Day is like May 1st in Norway, you might see some marching in the streets in the cities, however most people just stay at home and barbecue. In other words, it's not a day that is interesting for a tourist other than that you might find some good sales items at the mall.

Labor Day is a way that was started to honor workers, people who do the work that makes the country run. As a national holiday, most workers get the day off, banks are closed, schools & post offices are closed. People usually use Labor Day (Sept.) as the last picnic holiday of the year and Memorial Day (May) (to honor veterans of war, and to honor ancestors) as the first picnic holiday of the year.

It's a workers holiday supposedly but a lot of people still have to work as the grocery stores, department stores, hospitals etc. don't close. Office jobs, government and state jobs get the day off and it's summers last hurrah. Most people plan family reunions and barbeques to celebrate.
