the teeth have some wear marks from the bad starter, but they are not broken, they maybe look a little bit chipped

Depending on the car, some have an angle ground into each tooth on the ring gear.

Unless the starter won't engage any more, or skips while cranking the engine, don't waste your money.

More than likely, something else like the transmission is going to go out before the ring gear fails.

If the flexplate has all of its teeth, and is not cracked, there should be no need to replace it

i own a shop and you have to pull the transmission to replace the flex plate on one,the best time to do this would be if your going to have the transmission out of it,that's the only way or slide the transmission back far enough till you can get to the flex plate, either way its not an easy job to do,good luck with it hope this helps.

what causes that is someone trying to start it,when its already started.you might get by,without changing the flex plate.
