Chyder: He invaded countries 11 years before. Gassed Kurds in 1980.

We deposed one dictator and gave the Iraqis a genocide. God bless us.

"Support our troops" is a neocon code phrase meaning "extend duty tour."

I don't know about tyrant removal. We endorsed Saddam's attack of Iran. Sold weapons to both sides in that conflict, demonstrating our moral superiority.

Yes, he invaded Kuwait a decade ago. And we repelled that invasion, and after the Mutlah Ridge massacre left him powerless to do much else, save quell a few minor uprisings we fomented, much like our glorious work at the Bay of Pigs.

It would be nice if we really could bring democracy to the middle east. We might have been able to succeed had we concentrated on Afghanistan, were our efforts were justified. But by splitting our forces and diddling around, all we will accomplish is destabilization of the area for decades to come, much as our assassinations of foreign leaders in the 1950s accomplished in various places around the world. Guatamala remains a dismal US failure. We cannot even restore democracy to Haiti, a tiny island just off our coast. Clever thinking we could accomplish some glorious mission in Iraq.

What we HAVE accomplished is a $400 billion displacement of future public funds (deficits) into present corporate coffers. If the present administration has one shining mark of competence, it has been turning every natural disaster (Katrina) and debacle (Iraq) into excessive profiteering at public expense. That is one way to stimulate an economy. For a brief time, anyway.

Mitch--the CIA had Usama bin Laden in its gun sights in 2003, in the Torah Borah region of Afghanistan. They were ordered to stand down, in effect, and watch him escape. That was our boy Chimpy McFlightsuit.

Bill Clinton, for the record, ordered an airstrike against a camp Bin Laden was though to have been hiding at. If you will recall, G. W. B's first strike in Baghdad against Saddam Hussein also missed. At least Clinton made an effort against a legitimate target.

And since mission has been accomplished, Iraq has been a popular destination for Americans especially the U.S. military. They like it so much they might be spending more than the one year they usually stay. Even senators like John McCain likes to shop in Bahdad's marketplace. He gets great deals and a special loyal Bushie discount.

Bush hasn't been welcomed back to many aircraft carriers, has he?

Maybe the next time he wants to make that announcement he can skydive naked over Baghdad with a parachute that says "Mission Accomplished ... Finally".

If you define the "Mission" as the removal of a tyrant that invaded two of his neighbors, refused to live up to a treaty he signed with the US, and was funding terrorist organizations, then the mission WAS accomplished.

If we made any mistake, it was staying aorund. If all these factions in Iraq just want at each other, there's not a lot we can do to stop it.
