Friend, if you want big money, acting is a bad option.

As an actor, you will fail at the profession unless you are so devoted to the craft that you can't dream of doing anything else. The minute an actor says "If I don't make it in show biz I'll fall back on _____" then the acting career is doomed and that person winds up working in fill-in-the-blank.

If you are that devoted to acting, then you probably spend most of your working hours prior to, say, age 26 doing grunt-jobs to keep enough cash on hand to take lessons at a good acting studio and make the few auditions that are open to the public. Eventually you get a union card (Equity or SAG, they're equivalent and they honor each other's members) and an agent, and then you can make your living as an actor full-time.

However, 99.9% of the fully professional actors are not making big money. For every Tom Hanks and Reese Witherspoon out there, there are a thousand Ruth Ann Phimister-Werkleys and Joel Hawkins (I went to grad. school with those two. They've had professional careers--but I'm making about the same cash in my college professorship.)

Big money? Go into investment banking, liquid materials welding, pharmacology. They pay more, they pay reliably, and they're easier than becoming a thoroughly trained actor.

The truth is, you can indeed make big money in the acting world, but you're probably not going to like it. The majority of wealthy actors are NOT known to the world by name or face alone. They work commercials and industrials. If you want to promote Hemmorroid creams, you're in luck, you'll probably do very well, however I doubt you'll find your acting talents put to the test doing so. If you don't want to work the grind (which you'll have to do whether you're trying to get into film and tv, or theatre, or commercial/industrial work) then you're not going to make money.

If money's your concern, why not look into the tech end of it? Go learn a trade in stagecraft, or how to operate a boom or be a grip. Learn how to load a camera and you'll be set. Heck, go learn how to repair a Cyc drop and you could be a millionaire (I hear there's only one guy in the US who can fix one of those darn things and he makes bank).

I guess I just mean that you sound like you're not really all that interested in acting. If you're that concerned about money (which isn't BAD, people have to live and most of them don't want to turn around in ten years and find they have nothing more than when they started, or, God forbid, less) then why don't you get a job in some other field and just work in community theatres. There are plenty of good ones full of actors doing just that. Then you have your paycheck, and you get your acting itch scratched a little.

We actors, perform for the enjoyment of the craft, not to make "big money" in the acting industry.

The guy above is wrong, acting is a good way to be famous and make millions of dollars. I suggest you start at resume.imdb.com - then you should go to the website of the Screen Actor's Guild and meet their requirements.
