I speak from waitressing experience, they can't help it. Usually they are in a pattern: watch the door, get the water, take the order,check my tables, watch the door, serve the food, check my tables.....
Asking someone how their meal is when their mouth is full is almost unavoidable. I've even tried to time it and by the time I got over to the table they had something in their mouth.

Those are the ones that are tired of working and eating there
and don't care if you can answer. A good server knows when
to check, what to ask and when and makes top tips.

i've spent years in restaurants as both an employee and a customer and have never noticed that...
