Don't get me wrong but discrimination is required in our daily lives, for example learning the difference between a square and a octagon, we are taught it at an early age and we retain it rapidly. At the end of the day everybody disciminates and they only go as far as they do because of what they have learned or have been told by others, this includes parents, friends, neighbors etc.in otherwords social learning. So when someone goes as far as shunning another person because of a person's beliefs, the color of their skin, or even the quality of their clothes it's because of what has been hardwired into their brains since birth.
P.S.. I by no means condone negative discrimination and hope that my answer was to your liking.

Because they fear change and things that are different from what they know. People who grow up in an environment where they are not exposed to homsexuality or varied skin colors won't understand how to handle them when they see it. If people are brough up in a manner that exposes them to "alternative" life styles then more often or not they are more likely to not discriminate. The same thing goes for religion, though religion is a bit more dificult to accept a deviation from what they're used to. Many of my friends have felt at least one of the kinds of discriminations.

People discriminate not because they nessasarily hate, but because (1) They aren't comfortable with change; or (2) They don't like themselves and liking yourself is the first step to treating others with respect a.k.a. liking them. That's life, and unfortunately we have to live it...or don't. (((Not suggesting the second choice at all in any way nor form.))) Hope you find a better person to hang out with.

Ignorance. People hate what they don't understand, not to bluntly call a large population stupid but they just don't know or understand. Its really pretty simple, if they understood completely they would be much different, even if they disagreed, they would at least understand.

Everyone discriminates. We discriminate when we choose our partner because we believe they are the best around, we discriminate when we choose our friends because we value their company, we discriminate to pick the best movies.
Imagine if we didn't discriminate and were forced to hang out with people whom board us to tears.
Without discrimination there would never be shows like American Idol.
There is nothing wrong with discrimination.
