like you know how it is legal to listen to listen to music for free as long as you don't download.

the courts have ruled that possession of the material, even for nanoseconds in your computer buffer constitutes delivery of a product. so not retaining a copy in the computer memory does not mean that a copy was not delivered. this also affects all the participants in sharing process. so i am afraid that "watching" on your computer would still constitute participation in illegal distribution.

It is not legal to listen to or download copyrighted music for free unless the place you are watching/listening to it from has a licence to allow you to listen to it.

So,

As long as the place the media is on is licenced to let you access it, then its legal, if its not, its illegal.

It is not illegal to watch public displays of copyrighted material. It is however illegal to distribute without permission copyrighted material as well as to attempt to circumvent the security features of coptrighted materials.
