is there any particular way to memorize streets, and know your way around?

I live in southern california( orange county ) and i always hear people talk about random streets, and they just know every road and freeway/freeway exit like the back of their hand...

is there any program, or site on the internet to learn?..or what is a good way to know your way around besides driving around ..

If you live in the area, I'd recommend listening to local traffic radio that reports conditions quite often. They'll mention exits and freeways and such. Then you'll know them when you drive by. Keep a map in the car to look up such occasions. Search on Google and such for such streets.

Adding the GPS option to your mobile phone if your carrier offers the option is also not a bad idea. It'll give you a lot of directions and get you more familiar with the street names.

Study the city map first issued at the public works office or the commercial editions. You'll find groups of streets are often grouped, like lettered streets, numbers, birds, woods, etc. - etc. Telephone books will quickly confirm this. Once the group areas are traced out I like to compare the city map with topography maps available from USGS. These latter show a wealth of detail not seen on ordinary maps for that extra 'feel'. Older USGS often can tease out secrets that newer charts excluded because Federals don't want you too well informed about select areas (Defense Industry, Prisons, Chemical Pipelines, etc. - etc.).
