I have not been getting my period for quite sometime and therefore am not ovulating. My doctor put me on progesterone for 5 days (10mg) to start my period. I finished the pills on tues. morning and it is now Thursday around noon. How long after I finished the five days worth of pills should I expect to start my period? What happens if this does not work?

Anywhere from 2-14 days is normal but from my experience it takes about 3 days. Now, although this drug will cause you to have a withdrawl bleed it does not induce ovulation, you will need another drug for that.
If this does not work and you don't have a bleed then they will try the provera challenge again with a longer course--10-12 days.

Yes, I've taken Provera many times. Usually it just takes a few days for my period to start but there have been times when it's taken longer than that. Actually years ago I used to take licorice root (from GNC or some store like that) and it had the same effect as Provera. Another option for bringing on your period is to take the birth control pill, and you don't have to take all three weeks of the active pills. I found that the day my period would start was more predictable after the pill than Provera. But hopefully within the week your period will start.

The other person makes a good point that bringing on your period doesn't mean you'll ovulate this next cycle. You could have another long cycle. In which case you might need to go on Clomid or Tamoxifen or Letrozole or something. Good luck!
