Electric power generation, fertilizer production and plastic production uses a lot more oil than cars. Think you can live without electricity or plastic? Now there are substitutes for some plastic so it would be fairly easy to cut down on some of that. We can build more nuclear plants. Also we can drill in ANWAR and the Gulf of Mexico. And we can buy smaller cars and drive less. But nobody seems to want to. So I guess we are not dependent at all because nobody seem to care.

SO "dependent", that if the oil supply from the Middle East were cut off tomorrow- that our country would be in an Economic Depression by June 1st. The price of gas would go over $6. or $7. a gallon, and it would be rationed to 10 or 15 gallons per car, per week. And that would just be the BEGINNING of the effects on prices of things. It'd be REALLY bad news... :(

you need to ask? just look at the gas guzzling autos out there. I am talking the big ones being driven by the people who think they need an Expedition to pick up the kids from soccer practice or drive themselve to the office. the U.S. is too dependent on oil.

Totally dependent until we can stop overpaying domestic farmers to produce sugar cane and we can import it cheep from Brazil and the Caribbeans.
Sugar cane is 10 times more efficient at producing ethanol than corn is. Thats why at least 60% of the fuel sales at the pump in Brazil come from ethanol.
