points won or lost are based on ratings.close rated players may win or lose 15 points.a low rated player will win more against a higher rated player say 20 points,or lose less say 10 points.the reverse is true for higher rated player.that is why most players will boot lower rated players and try to keep rates close to even.

It makes sense really.
It's just like betting on a horse with low odds of winning, if you do win, you come out with alot more money.

If a high ranked player beats a low player, it's not much of a surprise. Afterall, one tends to expect that to happen. But if a low player beats a high player, it's a big upset, so they get rewarded for beating a higher scored player.

A high rated player is supposed to win. If they lose then they lose a lot.
