Celestial navigation is not just as easy as picking up a sextant and using it. Try reading Chapmans, Duttons Nautical Navigation, and the American Practical Navigator. All of them are considered the boaters bibles on navigation and all include celestial nav. Duttons would help the most. As stated before....lots of practice, patience, and more practice.

You need to get a copy of the Bowditch Manual. It is the simplest and easiest to understand. It was basically written for people who hadn't the opportunity for education. The following is what Wikipedia has to say about him.

Nathaniel Bowditch (March 26, 1773 – March 16, 1838) was an early American mathematician remembered for his work on ocean navigation. He is often credited as the founder of modern maritime navigation; his book The New American Practical Navigator, first published in 1802, is still carried onboard every commissioned U.S.

Read the whole article at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathaniel_Bowditch. If you're serious about navigation his book is a must.
