Louis Armstrong was a great musician, however, if I were to select a single musician which had a major impact during and post the Depression era it would be Woody Guthrie. His songs were about actual events, the people's condition and movements (such as the unions).

He sang about issues that people could relate to and he gave them a sense of hope and thankfulness for what they did have. It was an escape.
