Protozoa:
1. are single-celled
2. are heterotrophic, usually digesting food inside food vacuoles
3. have no cell walls, but some do have a flexible pellicle so they maintain their identifiable shapes; have contractile vacuoles to discharge excess water;
4. can usually move themselves around with cilia, flagella, or pseudopodia

Algae:
1. can be single-celled, filamentous, colonial, or multicellular
2. are autotrophic, using chlorophyll for photosynthesis
3. have cell walls, chloroplasts, and sometimes specialized parts for holding a large alga down, for reproduction, etc.
4. usually don't move themselves around, though some of the unicellular algae are motile

In many ways, protozoa and algae are similar. In biological terms, they belong to the same kingdom. They are both composed of eukaryotic cells, which means that they have a membrane-bound nucleus and some other basic cellular structures. However, their method of obtaining energy, as all organisms must, is very different and is the fundamental difference between these two types of organisms. Algae and protozoans belong to the same kingdom, Protista, which is the kingdom that is used for many organisms that do not fit neatly into another category. Protists include algae, protozoa and slime molds. The major difference between algae and protozoa is that algae are able to make their own food, as plants do, while protozoa ingest other organisms or organic molecules, as animals do. In scientific terms, algae are "autotrophs" and protozoa are "heterotrophs." The word "protozoa" actually refers to this fundamental difference, with "pro" meaning first and "zoa" meaning animal.

they are both protists which are multicellular or unicellular eukaryotes. algae are autotrophic and protozoans are heterotrophic. algae are plant-like and protozoans are animal-like. protozoans are motiles and algae are sessile
