Iranian cinema, in the general populous is almost always overlooked. However, there are some Iranian/Middle Eastern/Persian films that are on par with any film from any country, in terms of quality, substance, and emotion.

Of all, Makhmalbaf has impressed me the most over the years, and has two films in my top 100 of all time.

Gabbeh
THe Cyclist
(I've also seen Moments of Innocence and Close up)

Kiarostami is another world known director. To which I have seen and endorse; Taste of Cherry, and the Wind Will Carry Us.

And quite possibly, the most poetic depiction of loneliness and isolation comes in the 16 minute documentary from Farrokhzad, called The House is Black. Just that short film alone makes me place Farrokhzad into the category of best female directors ever!

not sure if these are Iranian, but films like Secret Ballet, Color of Paradise, and others are great films in their own right.

All this from a white boy living in Ohio, so they're available.

I have been very impressed with Iranian cinema.

Yes, I have seen Iranian movies.
Some of them are quite boring and stupid, or make me wonder how shallow the director must have been!
However, some are quite awesome!
One of my favourite Iranian movies is "The Day I Became A Woman" by Marzieh Meshkini
I loved that movie. I watched it as a kid and I loved it.

I just don't make it to Iran as much as I used to...lol
I'm sure they have good movie tents or whatever, but I'd be more concerned with someone throwing a bomb inside the theatre than anything actually playing on the screen. Sure, I like to watch movies to 'get away from it all'. But that's not where I want to go! LOL!
