Check out Mt Saint Helen's when it blew--there was a news man that broadcast until he was overcome by ash and died. Your life is on the line--it is not an easy job or a safe one.

I did live in Ecuador for 12 years and there are many volcanoes there . From my house in Quito I could see 5 snow capped volcanoes. But on the pipeline where I worked in the jungle I was very near the volcano Reventador. It is a special volcano as it is estimated at over 25 miles. The rocks that are the one out are very special as they are formed under such tremendous pressure. I flew in a helicopter to about 5 ft of the lip when we saw super heated steam vents very near .
