Well, you've said it. The laptop will shutdown if it's overheated. Like the poster above said, you need to go over to the Toshiba website to see if your laptop is one of those that has a battery recall. If your laptop is not on the list, you may need to replace your battery if it's over one year old. The rechargeable battery wasn't supposed to last forever. When using your laptop put it on a flat surface and do not block the air vents on the sides and/or behind the laptop.

Make sure that you always have an air space under your laptop and put it on a hard surface when using - in other words do NOT set it on the bed or on your lap because you can be blocking the cooling vents on the bottom. They sell vented "trays" to set a laptop on to prevent soft surfaces from blocking cooling.
If this isn't your problem and the laptop gets hot and didn't used to - I guess that you might have a dirty heat sink that you might be able to carefully blow the dust out of. I've never had to do this on a laptop, but I sure have on a desktop computer.

I think your best bet is taking you lap top to a pc repair shop as it don’t sound like it’s not a problem with the programs for example a virus,
I know for experience that most lap tops go a little hot underneath .

it may sound a bit far fetched but it sounds very much like a virus that is going around which slows down the fan making it over heat, if i was you i would run a FULL system scan, if you use mcafee or AVG it should find it, norton is pants so if you have that delete it and install AVG its free and every one loves feree stuff
Hope it helps

If i was in your posistion i would go back to the shop it was bought from if it is still under warranty.
If the warranty has ended then i would contact Toshiba or go to an independant repair shop as they are usually cheaper.

If the air vents are blocked with dust it will over heat, check they're clear. I'd be concerned if the batteries are being recalled as well.

Its probably due to your battery but it might be your CPU overheating if someone has overclocked it then it will cause it to shut down or break.
