Radical muslims bomb communists. Ask Russia.

And Chinese communists have killed over 70 million people.

Do you mean is there a muslim scare going on like the red scare of the 50's?

I don't think so. Communism was something of a boogie man back then - /anyone/ could be a communist, they were infiltrating every level of society, etc, etc...

Radical Islam is very different, it tends to stay were it spawns, Muslim-Americans are rarely radicalized. The Nation of Islam isn't viewed as Radical. The fear is of foriegners from Islamist nations.

Also, there's been not the slightest attempt of a 'purge' of Muslims in the US, quite the contrary, any hint of discrimination based on fear of radical islam is viewed with public horror and condemnation; compare that to the McCarthy hearings.

Another good analogy would be Japanese Internment. Obviously, the fear of Muslims in the US isn't running nearly as high in the wake of 9/11 as the fear of Japanese 5th columnists was running in the wake of Pearl Harbor...

From almost any substantive perspective, Communists and Muslims are quintessentially different.

But from the perspective of scaring people, I presume you mean Americans, I guess one could argue that Americans need some great evil in the world to fear. Last century, it was communism. This century, it seems as if it is going to be Islam. Some fear is rational, some is not.

I'lll leave it to you to figure out whether our current terror obsession is...

Communists wanted to dominate the globe, while many radical muslim organizations want the same thing. You hear them say things such as "destroy America, destroy Israel, we will rise." They share the desire to see the downfall of America as being the leading world power and despise westernized culture. Communism is also based on a dictatorship, same goes for many Middle Eastern countries where these radicals live: one guy at the top, calling all the shots. Communism is as far to the right as you can possibly go. Radical Muslims base their goverments off of religion which is also a very far far right-wing ideal.

Well there are similarities, of course. Communism was similar to Islamofascism in the fact that it was a repressive form of govt that subjugated it's people and killed those who refused to submit. It was only the strength of President Ronald Reagan paired with the inadequacies of Communism as a functional form of govt that lead to it's fall. The Left always wanted to befriend them, but luckily nobody listened.
Islamofascism is also a repressive form of govt. that treats it's people harshly, treats women as pack animals or worse, and kills those who disagree with even more vigor because they are the "infidel". They have indoctrinated many of their people into a Borg-like state where life is less glorious than death, so why not kill some children and bring them along?
This is why Islamofascism is even worse than Communism, for they do not fear death, they welcome it. Mahmoud Ahmadinijad has said if he gets a nuclear weapon he will use it to finish what Hitler started, even if it leads to Iran's destruction; Would any Communist have done that? Well maybe Castro.

Well lets see under the guise of fighting both unnecessary wars were started that took the lives of thousands of Americans.

I get your question but its hard to explain properly, the similarity between the "war on communism" and the "war on terror" is there though. As well as the irrational fear. Those who were afraid of communism in the 50s didnt totally understand communism and those who are afraid of radical muslims dont really understand the difference between radical islam and islam.

Both are a political ideals to the extremes. Both force you to do and say things you do not believe or they will punish you. Both want to rule with an iron hand. Both can have no descent.
