This is not a stab at rap or Imus, this is a question meant to develop dialogue by comparing arguments from both sides. Ignorance is reason we have racism and prejudice, so let's not be ignorant, instead let's discuss this!

Let's look at this from different angles. Yes, what the rappers and what Don Imus said is both wrong morally and ethically, but it's perfectly legal. Should Don Imus have been fired? No, probably not. Is this a First Amendment Freedom of Speech issue? No. Why? The Constitution only guarantees freedom of speech inasmuch as no level of government can tell you what to say and what not to say. What that means is the FCC, a government entity, could not demand Imus' firing. On the other hand CBS was well within their rights to fire him, as dumb as that was.

There is a slight difference...for example Jerry Sienfeld can get away with telling Jewish jokes.

Is it right in either case...not in my opinion, but it is a double standard that is present in all minority or majority groups.

By the way, I hate both Don Imus and rap music.

I don't get the whole racial thing with Imus though. He called the Tennessee team "pretty," and they have just as many black players as Rutgers.

Below are links to rap lyrics. There is no difference. Yes they are both wrong. It is even more wrong to only hold one person accountable and let others get away with it. The links of rap lyrics (all from african-american men) all have negative messages, disrespect women, and the "N" word.

mysticduder = hypocrite. What makes your remark any better? It doesn't, it just puts you under the same category of the other racist.

I think that both are wrong and innapropriate. however, i think that the difference between Imus getting fired and rappers not being questioned at all is that there are hundreds of rappers but only one Imus. it is much easier to punish one person than hundreds

here is an example of some rap music I have translated it into laymens terms for anyone who does not understand slang.
Lyrics:

First things first, I poppa, freaks all the honeys

Dummies - playboy bunnies, those wantin’ money

Those the ones I like ‘cause they don’t get nathan’

But penetration, unless it smells like sanitation

Garbage, I turn like doorknobs

Heart throb, never, black and ugly as ever

However, I stay coochied down to the socks

Rings and watch filled with rocks

TRANSLATION:

As a general rule, I perform deviant sexual acts with women of all kinds, including but not limited to those with limited intellect, nude magazine models, and prostitutes. I particularly enjoy sexual encounters with the latter group as they are generally disappointed in the fact that they only receive penile intercourse and nothing more, unless of course, they douche on a consistent basis. Although I am extremely unattractive, I am able to engage in these types of sexual acts with some regularity. Perhaps my sexuality is somehow related to my fancy and expensive jewelry

now you decide

honestly no longer something. the regular public at super in simple terms facilitates blacks to make fools of themselves and wreck out with it. It insults my intelligence and my ancestors to take heed to those who look like me demean women human beings. i won't have the ability to enable any music that degrades my race or women human beings in my domicile. That dirt won't supply any advantageous effect for my toddlers. i'm one which thinks TuPac develop into no longer a place type! neither is Ted Nugent. i ought to declare that's humorous to make certain the countless responses here. of course, there are people who've little or no authentic innovations approximately Al Sharpton. He has recommended the total banning of Gangster Rap, music that demeans human beings specifically and blacks specifically. i could say he's approximately as liberal because it gets and he's on the vanguard of attempting to do away with that dirt. We shoot one yet another like we are at an arcade pastime and extremely few human beings make a stink. permit somebody exterior my race shoot a guy or woman that looks like me and that's the top of the worldwide. of course, i do no longer want all people killing my human beings. in spite of the undeniable fact that, in todays worldwide i'm greater in touch approximately being insulted, shot, robbed or murdered by a guy or woman that looks like me than Don Imus. Why hearth him? That proves no longer something. the authentic discomfort would be inflicted by no longer spending my funds with the advertisers of his application. the main effective element we've is our paying for means. in simple terms like Nate King Cole's form application develop into pushed off the air by the lack of advertisers, so can Don Imus.

Rap ...the little I have been willing to listen to...seems to be fully of vulgarity, anti-female N -word and ho using crap. Compared to the rap, hip hop garbage I've heard...what Imus said;while unacceptable....is as church choir music. My opinion,

Because blacks can say anything they want to against whites & it's not considered racism. In fact, if whites DO say anything against rap lyrics, THAT is considered racist.
Now you all can go ahead and call me a racist for speaking the truth.
