If you are looking for a social worker job, you will need to attend the United Way Interagency Referral Network Meetings which are every 2nd Thursday at 9:00am (continental breakfast is served). The address is 50 Waugh. The meetings are FREE. Its attended by social workers and other staff from area nonprofits, human service agencies, etc. - and not just the United Way agencies. There is almost always 150+ people in attendance. Agencies frequently post job annoucements and people come to give out resumes and make contacts. I got a very good job by being a part of that group. Its an absolute MUST for you to make the right contacts for your career.
On another note. If you get an apartment, choose one close to your office. Rent in the Houston area is afforable compared to national average so finding one you can afford is likely almost anywhere in the city. Go on www.houston.craigslist.org to find everything from roommates, to rentals, to used furnature, etc. for your move. I know a recent college grad social worker may want to start out modest and thats a great place to furnish a new pad. Those are first things that come to mind. Good luck and welcome!

You will be right in the thick of the hot and sticky season. Houston is VERY uncomfortable during the summer and we have numerous bad air (not hair, well actually that too) days. You can look for local Houston jobs at www.jobing.com. you can also go to yahoojobs, monster.com or careerbuilder.com to look for jobs. Do you know what area you want to move to? Katy (I-10 West of Houston) is a nice area but the commute on I-10 is horrible. The higher end areas are inside the 610 Loop, the Woodlands, Kingwood, Clear Lake/Seabrook/Kemah. N-NW Houston (Cypress-Fairbanks, Jersey Village, Tomball, Spring) are all growing areas with middle of the road costs. Lots of apartments in Houston and many apartment finders. Let me know if you need any more information.
Good luck!

I think that most social work type jobs are in or near downtown, so I would suggest looking for an apartment "inside the loop", which means I-610. If times allows it, try driving around the Montrose community. There are a lot of places with for rent signs that you won't find through an apartment search website. Other than that, the suggestion looking for a place near where your job will be is a great idea. Don't be fooled into thinking Katy, Sugarland, Pearland, or the Woodlands are an easy commute. And don't move into Texas City, Pasadena, or Baytown whatever you do because they have really bad pollution in those places.

I think Houston offers a fast paced lifestyle with a bit of a laidback Southern atmosphere. So, there is a nice balance. As a single, you will want to live closer to downtown (inside the loop). Every place else is really more suburban and is designed for families.
