I bought a 1970 GMC truck but don't know how to shift the gears. The guy I bought from didn't know it was a stick shift.

It is a standard H pattern. Pull shift lever toward you and down for first or low gear. pull liver to center for neutral, push lever toward dash and up for second gear. pull lever straight down for third gear. For reverse pull lever up to center, then pull toward you and up. You will see how the shifter makes an H pattern. Push in the clutch peddle and practice the shift pattern before driving.

If you pull the shifter towards you and then slide it up you will be in reverse. If you pull the shifter towards you and then slide it down you will be in 1st to continue from 1st to 2nd slide it out of 1st and push the shift lever away from you and then up this is 2nd, from 2nd to 3rd push the lever strait down. If the shift pattern deviates from this at all the linkage is messed up. Enjoy!

It is a H pattern. Pull the shifter back towards you and down for 1st, back and up for Reverse, forward and up for 2nd, and forward and down for 3rd. Good luck
