Nothing that I know of besides being in front of anything racially charged, and being self-appointed like you said. And he's not the only one either. We need some new, real leaders for our generation.

Does Reverend Al's involvement in the 1987 Tawana Brawley Hoax count? For those who might no t"remember" Tawana was a 15 year girl in 1987 who claimed she was raped by 6 white men (some police men) after she went missing for 4 days and then "discovered" in a plastic trash bag covered in feces and racial slurs. Rev Al came to orchestrate the show.
The New York grand jury dismissed all charged against the 6 men and it was "suggested" Tawana made the whole thing up with possible assistance. Rev Al, Tawana, her mother, Vernon Mason & Alto Maddox (part of Rev Al'd team) all just wandered of to the next indignity.
So in my opinion Al hasn't done anything of real value for blacks in the US.

Rev Al has dont absolutly nothing for the black comunity he is a vulture that just looks for somthing that might be considered racist and then he jumps on it and makes a huge deal out of it to gain notority for himself. IE Duke Rape Case...He said some real bad stuff about those guys and in the end it was proven she had the DNA of 4 different men in her panties and none of it was from the duke team so to reiterate my answer he in not a role model nor does he do anything for the black community.

He's a low-life opportunist. He appeals to the lowest common denominator.
He latches on to any racial situation that might bring him credibility, supporters, admires, contributors, etc. The sad part is, not only does he hinder genuine efforts to improve racial tensions in our country, he has no guilt about using (and then discarding) human beings when they no longer serve his purpose. It's amazing people don't hold him more accountable (remember the Tawana Brawley stunt) but that's probably because most intelligent people just ignore him.

I'm sure he's done some good...unfortunately, he always jumps on any pro-black bandwagon that comes along, and his credibility suffers from it. He needs to be more selective about which causes he endorses or noone will give him credence.

Nice to see so many whites concerned about saving blacks from Al Sharpton.

He and others like him are fooling the black community.
They don't care about the poor, except to "enterprise" off them.
EDIT:
Why do they stay away from racial tension in other parts of the world? No money in it.
